Should we build our own AI system or buy a tool?
It depends on how standard the job is. Buy if thousands of firms do the job the same way, such as writing, summarising or research, and spend the money on training your people to use the tool well. Take a set package of agents if the job is common but you want it run for you, such as a front desk. Build if the job is specific to your brand, your process or your customers. Build, too, if it must work for named people by a fixed date, or if what you learn from it is part of your advantage.
Three routes, side by side
| Buy a tool and train your team | A set package of agents | A bespoke build | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good for | Writing, research, summaries and everyday work | A front desk: enquiries, quotes and bookings | A job specific to your brand, process or customers |
| First step | A two-hour Rainshift workshop, £500 + VAT | Rayna Local, from £150 a month + £500 setup and VAT | A scope workshop, then a build priced after a call |
| Who runs it | Your team | Us, with a named person for you | Us at first, then handed over to you |
| Example | Rainshift's AI PT and team training | Rayna Local | A hotel brand's companion app: six weeks from workshop to launch |
Prices as of October 2026, from rainshift.ai.
When building is worth it
Building costs more than buying, takes longer and needs someone to look after it. It is worth that when at least one of these is true:
- The experience is the brand. A luxury hotel brand's guests expected something that felt like the brand. The companion app followed its agenda, in its tone of voice, for 21 named guests. A general chat tool could not do that.
- The process is yours. An assessment firm's method is its product. The platform scores the online parts and leaves the live exercises to the firm's own assessors. No tool on the market knew where that line sat.
- There is a date. If a system has to work for named people on a set day, you need a team that answers for the result, not a licence.
If none of these is true, buy. We would rather you spent the money on getting your people good at the tools you have.
The hidden cost of buying
The licence is the small cost of a tool. The large one is the hours your people spend learning it, and the work that goes wrong while they do.
That is why Rainshift starts with your people's own work, so the tool you already pay for gets used. A first one-to-one AI PT session is £175 including VAT; a two-hour workshop for a team is £500 + VAT.
The hidden cost of building
A bespoke system needs an owner after launch. Models change, prices change, and the people who use it find things nobody planned for. We watch a system live, fix what people find, then hand it over. Your brand and content stay yours; the reusable frameworks we bring stay ours, so you do not pay for them twice.
Ask any builder, us included, what happens in month three. A good answer names a person.
Whichever route you take, start with one real job. To talk it through with us, tell us what you have in mind.
